It is not possible to confirm paternity directly with an mtDNA test, but it is possible to confirm the common maternal lineage\/ancestry of the tested individuals.<\/p>\n<p>An mtDNA test clarifies whether people share the same maternal lineage. Both women and men possess mtDNA, which is passed on from mother to child. However, only women pass mtDNA on to the child, as illustrated in the product sketch.
